About the Film

In 2010, a group of fourth-grade students in Oak Park, Illinois, learned how to start a business, then were taught about options for what to do with their profits: spend, save, or give. Their philanthropy benefited people they would never meet in Haiti. Fourteen years later, the filmmakers follow-up with a now-adult student and trace the trajectory this act of altruism had on his life and highlight the remarkable benefits paying it forward. This film is a longitudinal look at altruism—with an intergenerational component. It features renowned Associate Professor of Philosophy Agnes Callard (University of Chicago) and children's book author Katie Smith Milway.
